African Fat Tailed Gecko
Pet Care
Learn how to take care of your pet African Fat Tailed Gecko.
Substrate
African Fat tailed geckos shouldn't be kept on any type of loose substrate because
they can accidentally swallow the loose substrate and that can lead to health
problems. Also it is harder for them to hunt since the crickets can hide under your
substrate. It is probably best to keep them on carpet since it looks nicer and they can’t
get indigestion. Paper towels also work as a great substrate but aren't very natural
looking. It can help you if you feed your African fat tailed gecko in a separate
enclosure that way you can have a more naturalistic approach and you won’t have to
worry about your leopard gecko accidentally eating bark or other substrates. Also it
might help if you feed them in a separate enclosure then you can add substrate that
holds the moisture better. Sand does not work as a substrate since it can be easily
digested. Sand can be very bad for your leopard gecko if he eats it.
Environment
African Fat tailed geckos are nocturnal. Keep the day time temperature at around 85
degrees. Nighttime temperatures should be around 80 degrees. African fat tailed
geckos should be kept in a minimum of a ten gallon enclosure. Africa fat tailed geckos
are nocturnal but still need a light turned on to keep them warm during the day.
African fat tailed geckos don’t need UV lights but they do need some type of light
source. You should keep their light on for around 12 hours of the day like most
reptiles. Keep one side of the tank warmer than the other so your African fat tailed
gecko has the option of going on the cool side or hotter side. Heat rocks should not
be placed in the tank since they can easily burn your African fat tailed gecko since
they don’t have nerves on their stomach. There should be hiding places on the warm
and cool side of the tank. Make sure that two male African fat tailed geckos aren't
together since they will fight even if there is not a female around the cage. Female
African fat tailed Geckos can be kept together with one male per group. You should
only add a male to your group of females if you are looking to breed them.
Food
Leopard geckos should be fed crickets and meal worms as a main diet. Remove any
extra crickets so your leopard gecko won’t get stressed out about them. Only feed
them crickets that are the width of their head. They will eventually realize that they are
being fed and come out of their hiding places. There should be a small shallow water
dish for your leopard gecko to drink from. You should dust the crickets with calcium
every feeding time. Multi vitamins should be fed to your leopard gecko once a week so
your leopard gecko gets proper nutrition. You should change the water daily to
prevent parasites and harmful bacteria from growing in the water. A small bowl of
calcium should be provided in your leopard gecko’s tank so they can lick from it when
they need calcium.
Fun Facts
