Environment
When you pick your cage for your parrot never choose a circular cage because they
are known to stress parrots. Make sure that the cage bars aren't too wide otherwise
the parrot can get his head stuck in it or he can escape. African Grey parrots require
a lot of space because they are pretty large birds. The bigger the cage for your
African Grey Parrot the better. Your African Grey Parrot should have multiple climbing
places for him to fly around. There should also be fake leaves throughout the cage to
show a more jungle like theme. Make sure that in the cage there is a food dish and
water dish your African Grey Parrot should have easy access to his dishes. You
should probably put them to the side of the cage and have a rod lead up to it.
Food
The African Grey parrots food should consist of seed only diets, formulated diets,
pelleted or extruded, or a mixture of both meals. The formulated diet will give your
parrot all of the nutrients it needs this diet should make up 60-70% of their regular
diet. A seed diet will give your African Grey parrot all of the calcium and vitamins it will
need. Fresh fruit and vegetables will be a great snack for your African Grey parrot.
Never feed them fruit seeds, avocado, chocolate, alcohol, or caffeine since your
African Grey parrot will get sick. African Grey parrots are known to get obese if they
are fed to much so do not over due their diet. Always keep your parrots water free
from chlorine and fresh every day to ensure your parrot is getting healthy water daily.
Handling
If you handle your African Grey parrot they will soon become extremely tame. If you do
handle them make sure it is not a place where they can easily escape and never take
them outside in case they are to fly away. Most parrots should be tamed when they
are chicks if your parrot was not trained when it was young then it is probably not as
good as a pet to handle. You should get a pet that is already tamed so you wont have
to worry about taming your African Grey parrot.
