Environment
The Chinese Water Dragon is part aquatic part not. Usually you only keep one in an
enclosure since they need so much space. The young water dragons should have a
40 gallon tank and adults should have a 70 gallon tank. You should have a screen lid
for air circulation. They should have a large water bowl so they can get in and out of
it. Also you can have a water fall (they usually enjoy them). The Chinese water dragon
needs an UV light on for about 12 hours of the day. This helps them produce their
own calcium. The water dragon should have a temperature of 75-85 degrees in the
day and 75-80 degrees in the night. The basking spot should be from 90-100
degrees. Like all reptiles they should have hot and cool places in the tank this gives
them the option to bask or go in cool places of the tank. Also, the humidity should be
about 80%. This can be hard to maintain so it can be necessary to add live plants.
This temperature helps the water dragon produce some of its own calcium. It’s good
for Chinese Water Dragons to get natural light from the window.
Food
Water dragons are omnivores eating both meat and vegetables. Hatching's should be
fed every single day. As they get older they should be fed every 2-3 days. They will
eat crickets, and meal worms, dusted with calcium, peas, apples, collared greens,
bananas, and raspberries. Some Chinese water dragons are picky when it comes to
vegetables. If they do eat vegetables this should make up around 15% of their diet.
You should keep a shallow water dish in the tank for them. This provides a place for
them to bathe in and a drinking area. Make sure your water area is big enough so
they can get in and out with no problems. It is very necessary for you to clean their
water bowels at least once a day to stop parasites and bacteria to grow in the water.
Substrate
The 2 main substrates to use are soil and bark. Do not use pine or cedar wood chips
since these are poisonous to most reptiles. Make sure all your soil and bark does not
carry bugs and is sterilized. Be careful though because your reptile can eat the
substrate and get sick.
Behavior
The water dragon is an animal that you can hold. They need tamed before you can
hold them. Be gentle when you hold them. They are usually pretty calm animals and
won’t mind a hold. When you hold them make sure you do not grab them by their tail.
