Environment
Dwarf hamsters can adapt to most small enclosures but they need to have room to
burrow and to play in there habitat.  A big sized cage is usually best though.  Do not
use screen cages because they can chew the wire with can hurt your dwarf hamster.
Also it will make the area around the cage messy.  Keep in mind dwarf hamsters love
to chew on every thing so make sure you don’t put anything in there that can hurt the
gerbil if he chews on it.  Dwarf hamsters are really good at escaping so make sure you
have your enclosure well shut.  Wheels are a great entertainment for you and your
dwarf hamster it may take awhile for them to adjust to it.  A little nesting box will be a
great place for the dwarf hamsters to sleep.  Dwarf hamsters love to burrow so it is
important you have at least 2 inches of soft bedding.  Do not give them aspen or pine
wood chips or bedding these (are toxic to most animals).  Also, dwarf hamsters will
want a comfortable nesting place to sleep in so make sure there is enough material.
Give them places to play like ramps and other climbing accessories.  You might want
to consider giving them something to chew on since they love to nibble. They love to
shred and chew on cardboard.  Dwarf hamsters originate usually don’t require any
special light.

Food
Dwarf hamsters require a diet of seeds in there diet.  If the food is more than 3 months
old it is no good and could harm your dwarf hamster.  Make sure your dwarf hamster’s
diet consists of 16% protein and 4-5% fat to ensure your dwarf hamster remains
healthy and active.  Fruits and vegetables can be fed to them such as grapes, carrots,
peas, bananas, and strawberries as long as you make sure they are pesticide free
and are not rotten. When you water your dwarf hamster always make sure some type
of water bottle is available so they can drink whenever they want.

Handling
Dwarf hamsters are very tame and will usually only bite if they feel threatened make
sure that you wash your hands before and after you handle them so you keep the
animal and yourself clean and your pet.  Never squeeze your dwarf hamster or let kids
hold them by their own because you can hurt them bad.  They are very social animals
and do well with other dwarf hamsters.  They are very entertaining to watch and are
active animals.  From my own experience I have learned that you shouldn't hold them
by your shirt because they will nibble little holes in your shirt as soon as you turn away.
