Environment
Fancy Rats are very similar to gerbils and require most of the same needs. Fancy
Rats do best in a 1ft by 1ft glass enclosure tubes are great for Fancy Rats to climb in
and are quite entertaining. Do not use screen cages because they can chew the wire
with can hurt your Fancy Rats. Also it will make the area around the cage messy.
Keep in mind Fancy Rats love to chew on every thing so make sure you don’t put
anything in there that can hurt the Fancy Rats if he chews on it. Fancy Rats are really
good at escaping so make sure you have your enclosure well shut. Wheels are a
great entertainment for you and your Rats Mice it may take awhile for them to adjust to
it. A little nesting box will be a great place for the Fancy Rats to sleep. Fancy Rats
love to burrow so it is important you have at least 2 inches of soft bedding. Do not give
them aspen or pine wood chips or bedding these are toxic to most animals. Also,
Fancy Rats will want a comfortable nesting place to sleep in so make sure there is
enough material. Give them places to play like ramps and other climbing accessories.
You might want to consider giving them something to chew on since they love to nibble.
They love to shred and chew on cardboard.
Handling
Fancy Rats are very tame and will usually only bite if they feel threatened make sure
that you wash your hands before and after you handle them so you keep the animal
and yourself clean and your pet. Never hold your Fancy Rats by the end of the tail
because you can hurt them bad. They are very social animals and do well with other
Fancy Rats. They are very entertaining to watch and are active animals. From my
own experience I have learned that you shouldn't hold them by your shirt because they
will nibble little holes in your shirt as soon as you turn away.
Food
Fancy Rats are omnivores eating both plants and bugs. When you water your Fancy
Rats always make sure some type of water bottle is available so they can drink
whenever they want. Give them quality Fancy Rat food with correct nutrition for your
animal. These items should be located at a local pet store. If they aren't bought from
your local pet store they are probably not as high quality brands. They higher quality
nutrition the food has the healthier your Fancy Rats will be. Some people choose to
feed their Fancy Rats vegetables and hay. This is perfectly fine as long as you feed it
to them a little at a time and you make sure you only feed it as an occasional treat.
This does not give them much nutrition but is a good treat.
