Green Anole Pet Care
Learn how to take care of your pet Anole.
Food
The best food to feed anoles is crickets. Green anoles aren’t scavengers so they will
only eat live food. Make sure the crickets aren’t bigger than the width of their head.
Feed crickets to them every other day. Make sure once a week the crickets have
vitamins on them. Always feed the cricket’s nutrition and fruit so your anole will be
healthier. Each feeding dust the crickets with calcium. Only give the anoles as much
crickets as they will eat. It is best to feed the anoles water by spraying the cage. A
shallow water bowl can be put in to make sure they have enough water. They like
drinking off droplets of water but will sometimes drink from still water. Mist their cage
one time a day. It is best to give them distilled water since tap water has chlorine in it.
Environment
The minimum for one anole’s aquarium should be around 10 gallons. Don’t house two
males together because they can fight to the death even if theirs not a female
around. A great substrate to use is paper towels if you have females you might want
to try bark so they can lay their eggs under the bark. When anoles eat make sure
they can’t accidentally eat the substrate. It is extremely hard to digest and may give
the anole health problems. IT is probably best to use paper towels or reptile carpet
since crickets can hide under your substrate and it can hurt the anole to eat the
substrate. If it is absolutely necessary to have substrate then you can feed you anole
in a separate enclosure. Make sure there is some type of hiding place since almost
all reptiles love to hide. There should be various climbing spaces in the cage since
their real hoppers. Green anoles need UV lights. This helps them produce their own
calcium for nutrition. In the day keep the temperature about 80 – 90 degrees and at
night keep the temperatures at around 70 – 85. Florescent lights can be used to
maintain this heat. They aren't nocturnal so keep the lights on for 12 hours of the day
and at night make sure it is dark but warm.
First Week with your Anole
When you first get your anole give him at least 5 days to settle in. Once your anole
settles in for a while start letting him lick water off your finger then slowly work your
way up to being able to hold him. Make sure you have read about anoles before you
get them so you know exactly what they need. Also make sure the environment is
already set up to make your lizard very comfortable in its new environment
Fun Facts
Green anoles can live any where from 1-6 years if you take proper care of them.
Most anoles you can hold but some will try to jump all around so it really depends on
the animal. Most anoles will sit on your hand. Be cautious most anoles can die from a
long fall so it is important you make sure you don’t squeeze the anole or don’t hold it
up to high. BE cautious and make sure all your heat and humidity supplies are set at
the right temperature and you don’t over spray humidity the tank.a
