Mice are very common animals. They will nest under tight and hidden spots. Mice will
eat vegetation as a primary food but they will eat bugs too. Mice are very shy animals
and will run as soon as a human approaches. They will have about 4 babies. Mice
get picked off by a lot of predators such as a hawk owl or cat. They can breed very
easily and it does not take long to raise litters. In some cases mice will over breed and
have hundreds of mice in one spot. Mice like to live in fields because it is hard for
them to be seen. Their nests are made out of straw and twigs and they look like small
burrows. Mice will typically get about 3-6 inches long depending on what type of
mouse it is.
If you ever find a mouse that is an adult, just leave it alone, because if you play with it,
the mouse may suffer a heart attack and die. It is best to leave them alone unless
they are injured. Also, a sick mouse carries germs that can be passed down to you.
Baby mice can be cared for, however, but should be kept in a dark place to make them
feel comfortable, such as a cardboard box with a fold-over lid. Baby mice huddle
together for warmth and comfort. Infant mice need to eat a lot or they will die if not
properly fed. Keep them in a place where they will stay warm, giving the baby mice a
place where they can hide. Remember not all baby wildlife have a 100 percent chance
of living, so some may die. If possible, take wildlife to a local animal care clinic if you
would like to get a professional opinion, or if you are able to give the wild animal(s) to
someone trained in caring for baby mice.
Feeding: Baby formula works well and should be given every four hours. Baby mice
typically squeak when hungry, and will turn away from the eye-dropper when full. Still,
ensure all mice are eating, remaining patient and willing to force-feed them if not
eating. If you can not find baby formula there is a supplement that you can use only for
the first day. It can not be used permanently. Use 2 cups water 3/4 sugar and 1/4
salt. This will get them through there first day just in case you can not get baby
formula. One of the best things to do is get a foster mother for the babies but a lot of
times they are not available so the formula will work well. They also sell baby rat
formula but you have to get it from a breeder usually.
Remember you should always help an animal in need. It can be very rewarding
knowing that you have saved an animal's life.
