Painted turtles are one of the most popular turtles in America because they can live in
many areas. Painted turtles will eat bugs fish and other types of prey as a main
source of food. Painted turtles like to bask during day because they build up harmful
bacteria that can kill them so the sun kills them. Painted turtles will often bask with
other turtles. Sometimes fifteen painted turtles will bask on one log. Turtles can hold
their breath for at least 20 minutes. They are shy when it comes to humans. They
don't bite that often but if you stick a finger in their face they will think its food or they
will try to bite in defense. Painted turtles will live at least 13 years but they can not live
as long as some turtles can. A lot of people will have painted turtles as pets.
Although it is not good to take an animal out of their natural environment they do make
great pets. Painted turtles will grow about 6 inches maximum and when they are
babies they will be about the size of a half dollar.
If you ever find a painted turtle just let it go. Painted turtles can do great on their own.
The only time Painted turtles will need help is if they are caught in some type of netting
or fish line or if they are severely injured. If they are wounded patch up the wounds
and stop the bleeding. The bad part is that when turtles swim in the water they get
tons of bacteria on them. The food part is that turtles can take in a lot of bacteria but
not too much. Try to clean out the wound as much as you can. If it is caught in
netting undo the netting but undo it first if their is any around the head. Make sure
that you wash your hand as soon as you handle a turtle because they have bacteria
all over them. Also many people think that baby turtles need rescued but baby turtles
can do great on their own and you should not handle them or keep them as pets.
