Rat snakes are very cool snakes. They will get extremely large about 3 feet when they
reach adult hood. Rat snakes obviously will eat rats and other small rodents. They
actually are very helpful animals because they will kill pesky rats or mice. They always
eat head first or at least they should. If they eat from tail down the animal can get
stuck because the legs will stick out in its stomach. Like almost all snakes their jaws
can open to unusual length. What happens is their jaw disconnects. This is why they
can swallow small rodents. Rat snakes will sun during the day but they will rest in
shade if it gets too warm. Rat snakes are very nice snakes and will not bite you unless
you mess with them and pick on them. Rat snakes are usually jet black and their
scales are really thick.
If you ever find a rat snake leave it alone unless it is injured. Sometimes rat snakes will
get injured from an animal or a car. Although rat snakes are usually nice they can be
grumpy if they are injured. First you want to catch the snake and be as calm as you
can. They do not need any more stress than they already have. Tend to the wounds
get out as much dirt as you can otherwise the rat snake can get infected with bacteria.
Put some type of cloth or bandage over it and keep it until it heals then release it back
into its habitat. If it is too injured or it needs stitches you will probably need to take it to
someone who knows a lot about snakes so they can properly care for the injured rat
snake.
