Environment
When you decide to get your South American Cichlid you must make sure that you
environment is just right for your Cichlid. Make sure that your pet has many caves
throughout your enclosure to ensure you will have a place for your Cichlid to hide
when it is scared. Add a filtration system to the tank to keep your pet from getting
harmful bacteria into their system. Also make sure the acid level is between 7.5 to
8.5 to make sure the water doesn't get to acidic or basic. You can add a special
buffer made for your South American Cichlid that will rise the Ph level to the level you
need it at. Also make sure your Cichlid's water temperature is between 7.5 to 8.3.
You can put in an underwater thermometer to check th temperature. You can also
add a heater to your Cichlid's tank if you can not contain the right temperature for
your fish.
Food
Cichlids have their own food groups. Some cichlids are omnivores which means they
will eat other fish species that are smaller than them and also Cichlid omnivores will
eat flake foods or live plants. Some cichlids are carnivores which means they will only
eat meat. Some cichlids are herbivores which means they will only eat plants or flake
foods. You need to find out your Cichlid type when you purchase a Cichlid. Their is a
ton of cichlids so you need to find out which type of food group your Cichlid has. If
you don get the right food for your Cichlid it will completely mess up their diet. Some
Cichlids will also need special nutrients in their diet. If there is more than one fish in
each tank you should make sure that you feed them more than once a day also make
sure that each fish gets the same amount of food and make sure their are no runts
other wise the other fish in the tank will have dominance over them.
