Spiny Tailed Iguana
Pet Care
Learn how to take care of your pet Spiny Tailed
Iguana.
Iguanas are great pets but a big commitment. After you get your iguana it is hard to
get someone to buy it back. If you get an iguana make sure you are willing to take
care of it and commit your time. Read about iguanas before you decide to bye one.
Behavior
Male iguanas can’t be housed together since they will often fight and hurt each other.
Females can be housed together since they don’t fight for males. Their can be one
male to every group of females. Remember iguanas need a lot of space and it will be
hard to get enough space for more than one iguana.
Environment
Iguanas need high humidity since they live in tropical areas. You can achieve this by
misting the cage a bowl of water also helps keep the humidity. This high humidity also
helps them shed their skin. The iguana should have cool and warm places of the tank
so your iguana can choose where he wants to go. In the cool areas keep the
temperature at 75-85degrees. Basking areas should be 85-95 degrees. Night time
temperatures should be around 70. UV lights should be used to help your iguana
produce calcium. This is also a great heat source. Florescent lights can be added to
get the temperature up a little. Keep these lights on 12 hours of the day since
iguanas aren't nocturnal. Iguanas like to climb but still like the ground. Branches
should be included to allow the spiny tailed iguana to run around a little bit. A large
amount of space is needed for the spiny tailed iguana. Hiding areas should be
provided in both cool and warm paces of the tank.
Food
Iguanas are herbivores eating plants. Books have suggested that iguanas need a lot
of protein but this is not accurate. Iguanas mainly eat vegetables and too much
protein can hurt their kidney. Fruits and vegetables should be high in protein for your
lizard to have a nutritious diet. Calcium and vitamins should be added to their diet
once a week. Iguana’s water dish should be deep like a tub for them to bathe and
drink from. Make sure you clean the water daily if your iguana bathes in it.
Handling
Iguanas are a species of animal that can be easily tamed. Some iguanas may be
jumpy but will eventually stop if you handle them consistently. Be cautious during the
breeding season because some iguanas will get a little aggressive. Most iguanas are
already tamed but some you will have to work to tame them. Start slowly by petting
them then work your way up to being able to hold them.
Fun Facts
Iguanas come in many bright colors. Iguanas can reach 15 years of age if properly
cared for.
